Hosting your own festivities during this time of year, or hosting a company party? We can help you keep you, your party helpers, and guests safe!
If you’re partying at home, safety-proof your house beforehand
Pretty much everyone loves a party! Plus, the past year or two has been pretty light on fun. So some people are probably going to party a little too hard.
Don’t leave things out that could easily be knocked over. If you have cords where people might be walking, tape them down. Make them visible to avoid trips and falls.
Enjoy candlelight? The safest way to handle this is flameless candles. But if you decide you must have real candles with actual flames, set them in spots where they can’t be easily knocked over. Also ensure they’re not close to any flammable material like window curtains.
Cats, children, and other non-adult humans sometimes get a little too amazed by watching the lights flicker, so consider clearing them out of the room ahead of time.
We love dogs! However, they often do best in a different room. One without partygoers. Even good dogs get riled up or over excited with so many people in the house.
If you have valuables, just remove them from public spaces! It’s easier to set them out of sight than to worry all night about them breaking or being damaged.
Help guests booze responsibly
Serving alcohol? Make sure you’ve got non-alcoholic drinks available as well: water, soft drinks, or mocktails. Currently there are a lot of non-alcoholic beverages designed for adult palates (and many of them are low-cal) so consider exploring these options.
Stop serving about an hour and a half before you expect people to leave. This gives people time to sober up before getting back on the road.
Speaking of which, don’t let people who are obviously unfit to drive behind the wheel of a car! If ridesharing services like Uber or Lyft haven’t made it to your hamlet yet, have the number for the taxi service available.
Provide food too! It doesn’t have to be fancy, just something that slows down the rate of alcohol absorption.
If the party’s at your house, maybe hire a bartender. They’ll ensure they’re not overserving anyone. If you have heavy drinkers, mix the drinks yourself.
If you’re helping to set up a company party, the same rules about nonalcoholic drinks, the time to stop serving, and having sober drivers available apply. The venue might be able to help you out with some recommendations for all of these as well.
Save the backs
Is your catering staff standing around with their hands to their backs, trying to press away the pain? Does your back hurt because you have to bend over too far to pour drinks for your guests?
If you’ve got a folding table, you can lift it up to kitchen counter height or bar height (or even higher!), in many cases. Then you and your helpers can pour the drinks without strain.
It’s a festive occasion, so make sure everyone is having a good time, no back pain or neck strain!
Make it social
Especially after these past topsy-turvy years, people are really enjoying the ability to connect in person. Try to have places for people to mingle and walk and meet each other. You might have to push your chairs or sofa against the wall in order to create the space.
Plan some fun activities. Like the food, this doesn’t have to be fancy. Games give people something to do besides drink, and can help them get to know each other better.
If you’re at a venue, see what tricks they can offer to promote mingling and talking instead of just sitting down at the table. Having some music to dance to is always a crowd favorite.
