There are many Black people to honor in February, and one of our favorites is Madame C.J. Walker. She was a pioneer in consumer products in several different ways.
Who was Madame C.J. Walker?
Born Sarah Breedlove in 1867 to parents who were born enslaved, she was their first child to be born free after the Emancipation Proclamation. Her parents died when she was six, and she married her first husband at age 14. He died when she was twenty.
She suffered from a scalp disorder that resulted in hair loss, and it inspired her to create her own system of hair care for Black women. She sold her handmade pomade and other products directly to Black women, and later hired saleswomen she called “beauty culturalists” to help her spread the word.
She met her second husband, Charles J. Walker, who provided the name for her company. At first they worked together on marketing, mail orders and ads. As the company bloomed, their marriage disintegrated and the two divorced.
At the height of her business, the company had 3,000 Black saleswomen who sold her products mainly door to door. The “Walker system” of haircare for Black women made her a millionaire. She died in 1919.
Inspiring consumer businesses everywhere
Not only was Madame C.J. Walker the first Black woman to become a millionaire, but she was the first female millionaire period. Her consumer products business enabled her to buy real estate that was a far cry from her hardscrabble childhood.
Madame C.J. Walker was also a well-known philanthropist who donated money to the Tuskegee Institute to fund scholarships for women. She also gave money to the NAACP, Black YMCA and a number of other charities.

Not only did Madame C.J. Walker develop her very own consumer product, she was a savvy entrepreneur and found a way to sell her products and then scale up with beauty consultants. She was financially independent at a time when many women, Black or otherwise, were not. She marketed her products as health care, not just hair care.
She gave back to her community too. She could very easily have hoarded her wealth (as some billionaires continue to do today) but instead she chose to donate where she knew her money would do some good.

I set up an area on my back porch for bleaching and dyeing shirts. Unfortunately, the tables I got didn't have adjustable heights. I ordered the wrong size from Amazon. When I tried to return them, Amazon directed me to the Lift Your Table company. I spoke with Bethany and she helped me figure out what size I need. She did not charge me for the additional expense of the larger size. She only charged me $15 for shipping. She told me that I didn’t need to return the original set but to gift them to someone who could use them. She was very professional and very kind. I highly recommend this “Made in America” company!
The NuChair design makes sense, so I bought one, and my staff love it! It does offload the low back when sitting and maintains tall strong sitting posture while sitting. In 40 years of practice I have never seen a chair that can deliver good ergonomics and postural support. The NuChair is the NuWay to get it done. Bravo.
These are a life-saver. I am going to get them for all of my work tables. No more hunching over! And, I can stand and work if I want to. We know that sitting is really bad for us. This was a VERY worthwhile purchase.
I am a DJ and I get tired of bending over all the time on a normal table. This thing did the trick! It puts everything at a much easier level so I can see it and reach for it so much easier.
Wow! These were the perfect solution to use at our food booth during a big event. Instead of purchasing another stainless steel prep table, we used these to elevate our normal 8′ tables and they were a lifesaver! Or should I say back-saver?
After a month, it’s really hard to complain about much regarding the chair. My shoulders, neck, and lower back all feel the difference, and as a 25 year tattooist, I feel the effects of work on my body. I train, stretch, and eat well, but also have a massive neck injury that has threatened to take me from my career, and it feels like this chair adds some years back!
My only suggestions would be for a more breathable, simple to clean material. Wearing jeans in this chair can get fairly sweaty, but I’m working around that.
Additionally, the other thought I had was to offer a shock height option for those of us that are tall. I suggested it already to the staff, and they provided me full specs on the current shock so I would be able to find a larger one utilizing the same width dimensions.
