February is Responsible Pet Owners Month, and lots of people consider grooming an important part of pet ownership. We do – that’s our Heinz-57 breed Oakley up there on the table!
There are a lot of potential safety issues when it comes to grooming our beloved pets. We found some tips and tricks for everyone to stay bite and injury-free while you’re clipping the hounds.
Pet Safety
Have the owner put the pet on the floor instead of handing directly to you. Then you can scoop them up, one arm under their tummy. It helps you hold the leash so the pet’s head is away from you and not in bite range.
Ask the owner if there might be any issues. The pup with the cutest angel face can still easily get out of hand.
If the dog will be going in a kennel, remove collars and leashes. If not, make sure they’re safely restrained. Crating pets when you’re not grooming them is always recommended.
Watch carefully as you groom for signs of changing behavior. Growls are usually a sign of fear, so stop if they growl or otherwise seem anxious.
Don’t leave the pooches on the table unattended. Have tools set out ahead of time so you don’t have to stop the session to grab them.
Use tearless shampoo around the eyes, lower settings on the hair dryer and introduce clippers slowly to avoid frightening them.
Handle them firmly so they understand that you’re the one in control. This is especially important when putting them into or taking them out of kennels and crates, since dogs commonly try to make a break for it.
Groomer safety
Wear appropriate clothing, including a mask so your nose and mouth don’t fill up with dandruff and fur. Plus bite-proof gloves and long sleeves and pants.
Put down no-slip mats under you and the table and wear non-slip, comfortable shoes.
Make sure the table is at the right height so you don’t have back strain while grooming. If you’re using a folding table, you can use risers to lift the surface to an appropriate height.
Keep your grooming room clean and toss the trash regularly, wiping down the equipment often. It’s not just important during the coronavirus pandemic!
If a particular pet is completely out of control and you think it’s too dangerous to the pooch or yourself to groom them, let the owner know.
Put your phone down! The last thing you want while clipping sensitive areas is to be startled or distracted.

I set up an area on my back porch for bleaching and dyeing shirts. Unfortunately, the tables I got didn't have adjustable heights. My back was constantly aching from bending over a table for prolonged periods. I ordered these after seeing all the reviews on Amazon. What a lifesaver! I ordered the wrong size from Amazon. When I tried to return them, Amazon directed me to the Lift Your Table company. I spoke with Bethany and she helped me figure out what size I need. She did not charge me for the additional expense of the larger size. She only charged me $15 for shipping. She told me that I didn’t need to return the original set but to gift them to someone who could use them. She was very professional and very kind. I highly recommend this “Made in America” company!
The NuChair design makes sense, so I bought one, and my staff love it! It does offload the low back when sitting and maintains tall strong sitting posture while sitting. In 40 years of practice I have never seen a chair that can deliver good ergonomics and postural support. The NuChair is the NuWay to get it done. Bravo.
These are a life-saver. I am going to get them for all of my work tables. No more hunching over! And, I can stand and work if I want to. We know that sitting is really bad for us. This was a VERY worthwhile purchase.
I am a DJ and I get tired of bending over all the time on a normal table. This thing did the trick! It puts everything at a much easier level so I can see it and reach for it so much easier.
Wow! These were the perfect solution to use at our food booth during a big event. Instead of purchasing another stainless steel prep table, we used these to elevate our normal 8′ tables and they were a lifesaver! Or should I say back-saver?
After a month, it’s really hard to complain about much regarding the chair. My shoulders, neck, and lower back all feel the difference, and as a 25 year tattooist, I feel the effects of work on my body. I train, stretch, and eat well, but also have a massive neck injury that has threatened to take me from my career, and it feels like this chair adds some years back!
My only suggestions would be for a more breathable, simple to clean material. Wearing jeans in this chair can get fairly sweaty, but I’m working around that.
Additionally, the other thought I had was to offer a shock height option for those of us that are tall. I suggested it already to the staff, and they provided me full specs on the current shock so I would be able to find a larger one utilizing the same width dimensions.
